Yesterday afternoon, Tuesday December 2nd 2013 just after 12pm, EMER-G-MED’s RV3, RV6, TM1, A02 & A06 as well as other services responded to reports of a serious collision on the R511 on-top of the Jukskei bridge, in Diepsloot.

Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a bakkie and taxi had collided head-on, leaving many with serious injuries. It is alleged that the taxi was trying to overtake another vehicle, over a solid white line, when it collided head-on with the bakkie.

Paramedics assessed the scene and discovered that one person had unfortunately died on the scene, and a total of 15 people had sustained serious injuries, with two of them being in a critical condition and heavily entrapped within the wreckage. The Lonehill fire department was called in to assist paramedics in extricating the two entrapped patients using the “jaws of life”.

After an hour long cut-out and extrication process the two critical patients – who sustained serious head; chest; possible spinal injuries; as well as multiple fractures – were treated and stabilized on scene before being rushed to near-by provincial hospitals by EMER-G-MED’s A02.

The further 13 patients were treated on scene for minor-to-moderate injuries and were transported to an assortment of near-by hospitals by EMER-G-MED as well as other services.

JMPD as well as the South African Police Services were on scene to investigate the events leading up to the collision.

Paramedics remind motorists that overtaking on a solid white line is not only illegal, but is a life-threatening driver action
