The Hawks, in conjunction with Crime Intelligence and the National Task Force, uncovered another arms cache related to the Afrikaner white extremist group – Boeremag. Information relating to this arms cache was revealed during the latter part of the trial in the Pretoria High Court.
An intensive intelligence-driven investigation, which continued for a few months, bore fruit last week Thursday, 30 January 2014, when the team found the firearms.
The hidden firearms were found on a farm in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. During the search, the following items were found: three 20 mm cannon barrels, a firing pin, a tripod mount for a cannon, four 20 mm rounds of ammunition, five 500 mℓ cold drink bottles filled with 7.62 ammunition, three 500 mℓ bottles filled with .22 ammunition, three 37 mm rounds, and a CS grenade.
No arrest has been made as the farm, where the discovery was made, has no residential building, except a house which is used for overnight hiking facilities.
Herman Van Rooyen and Rudi Gouws, who are members of the Bomb Squad, allegedly hid the firearms during their first escape in 2005. They are now serving an effective 25 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to kill the late former President Mandela.
The investigation continues.
