“He was awesome, excellent and very fast!”
A local off-duty police officer chased and caught a 26-year-old suspect who allegedly stolen a Samsung S4 and wallet from a motorist at the corner of Summit Road and R511 in Diepsloot on Tuesday morning.
The motorist had stopped with an open window at the intersection waiting for the robot to turn green when the suspect reportedly pounced. It is reported that the suspect threatened the victim with a handgun and demanded the car, a Mitsubishi Pajero.
The loud screams from the car alerted the off-duty police officer who was driving from behind. The police officer jumped out of his car and the suspect started fleeing on foot, allegedly carrying a handbag taken from the victim’s car. He chased him across the road into Diepsloot extension two informal settlement.
“I chased after him until he got tired,” said the arresting officer, constable Tshwarelo Mokaba.
The owner of a white Mitsubishi Pajero could not contain his joy after the fugitive was caught. “He was awesome, excellent and very fast” he exclaimed after witnessing the police officer’s commitment and endurance.
The suspect will be charged with armed robbery and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
We are appealing to motorists to be always alert and cautious when approaching that intersection. They must keep window closed and doors locked and take reasonable steps
