Johannesburg Emergency Services warned motorists to not underestimate flooded roads. After three days of non-stop many roads have already been flooded and the rain is expected to continue until Friday. The heavy rain is also causing many potholes which cannot be repaired during these raining conditions.
Motorists are warned to avoid flooded road and low lying bridges and to lookout for potholes that may be less visible on the roads due to flooding. Motorists are also advised to decrease their speed while driving in the rain and on wet roads.
Emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe advised motorists to not cross flooded roads as vehicles can be swept away. “We also advise that people stay away from storm water drainage systems,” she said.
She said officials were monitoring the situation, and at the time of commenting, the only report of serious flooding was that of the Westdene Dam which was overflowing.
Four people were rescued after their vehicles were trapped in floodwater in Westdene on today. The incident occurred when the Westdene dam overflowed after heavy rain, and water flooded Lewes Road in the suburb. Motorists are advises to avoid the road and use Perth Road and Main Road as alternatives.
