Step aside Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Picasso because the artists of the SA Sweet and Snack Expo are getting ready to dazzle audiences with their decadent edible artworks. From the 11th to the 13th of April 2014 at the Coca-Cola dome will be hosting this mouth-watering celebration of sweet and snack delights, and as part of the excitement, the Expo is serving up several scrumptious competitions. These competitions are open to all, with the exception of the celebrity challenge, and give aspiring edible artists the opportunity to show-off their creativity and skills by whipping up delicious masterpieces made out of sugar, chocolate, cakes and cupcakes.

Competitors will use their imagination to build fabulous confectionery creations in line with their interpretation of the overall theme “The Road To…” there is no limit as far as ingenuity is concerned. There are six competitions over the three days, expo-goers are encouraged to come and view and encourage the artists as they blend, melt and shape their sugary pieces. The deluxe competition area will be furnished and equipped by LG and Prenox and is the perfect place to view all of the action. On Friday the 11th from 9am – 1pm the Most Amazing Sugar Art competition will be held, with pieces being made from anything sugar-related, such as chocolate and icing. The Most Amazing Sweet competition, which will be from 2:30pm – 5pm on the same day, will include a broader category of ingredients, such as cake, licorice, biscuits and other sweets of choice or conventional “sweet” (tarts, dessert etc). On Saturday the 12th of April from 9am – 1pm, aspiring cake bosses can also compete in making the Most Amazing Cake, followed by the Celebrity Competition on the Saturday. Sunday the 13th of April is a must for chocolate lovers, as the Most Amazing Chocolate competition kicks off from 10:30am – 1pm, and the last competition of the expo is the Most Amazing Cupcake competition, on Sunday from 2:30pm – 4pm. All entries will be judged on creativity, skill, craftsmanship, originality, display – and of course – how they taste. Audiences can expect to see some truly astounding show pieces from some of SA’s top bakers, pastry chefs, sugar artists and choclatiers.

The Celebrity competition will be a unique challenge for local celebrities to get in touch with their inner artist and chef, whilst making money for charity. Eight celebrities will each pair up with a randomly selected exhibitor from the Expo. The exhibitors will create an artwork out of “sweet” ingredients on the day, and then celebrities will have to create a copy of their selected exhibitor’s artwork purely from memory. The audience will judge the best celebrity attempt and all finished artworks will be auctioned off there and then. The winning celebrity will get R1000 cash + all other collected monies to this competition to donate to a charity of their choice. So come see some local SA talent covered in chocolate and dusted in sugar as they sculpt, slice, smear and sprinkle sweet ingredients to create edible showpieces of delight.

The SA Sweet and Snack Expo is set to be the tastiest treat to ever hit Joburg. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and snack trends, local and international exhibitors of every flavour and plenty of fun and entertainment all under one roof.
