The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Anwar Dramat, welcomed the sentencing of a former police detective of Ivory Park Police Station, who was convicted of fraud, theft, and forgery and uttering.
On June 18, 2014, the Kempton Park Regional Court sentenced 45-year-old Evert Grobler to 15 years’ imprisonment.
Grobler worked as a detective for several years before tendering his resignation in 2009. He was found guilty of stealing an amount of R20 200, 00 which he was supposed to deliver to the South African Reserve Bank in Pretoria and falsifying acknowledged receipt of the cash.
The money was kept at a police safe keeping facility when police members of the Ivory Park Police Station seized it from a suspect and forfeited it to the state.
Lieutenant General Dramat applauded the team, who were involved in the investigation, for their sterling work.
“We warn our members to avoid temptations when they come across cash in the process of their duties. We expect our law enforcement officers to live up to the employment ethics. We have been entrusted with enormous responsibilities and we therefore have to exercise our powers with responsibility,” said General Dramat.
