Armed hijacker arrested in Sharonlea

An armed hijacker was arrested by the SAPS at approximately 8.30am on July 31, 2014 at the top end of Rooiels Road in Sharonlea. It is alleged that a taxi with school children was apparently hijacked in Soweto earlier that morning and broke down at the Total Garage corner Malibongwe and President Fouche.

The driver escaped over a back wall into a resident’s yard in upper Rooiels Road setting off their electric fence alarm. Their neighbour on hearing the alarm saw the suspect climbing into his driveway. He called RSS and Douglasdale Police who responded with a helicopter and at least eight police vehicles. RSS and other Security were also in attendance.

A number of very angry taxi drivers also arrived on the scene looking for the suspect. The initial Police sweep found nothing. The owner’s wife then saw the suspect hiding in bushes and Police arrested him.
