Week (IADW) was created to recognize all the devoted, hardworking guide, service and assistance dogs helping individuals achieve their goals in life. These dogs transform the lives of their human partners with visual, physical and mental disabilities by serving as their companion, helper, aide, best friend and close member of their family.
During International Assistance Dog Week, we recognize and honour hardworking assistance dogs by raising awareness and educating the public about how these specially trained animals are aiding so many people in our communities.
As part of this awareness the grade 8 and 9 pupils of Summit College paid a visit to the Association. Pupils were given an overview of the organization, introduced to Ash, a seven week old Labrador, and given a talk and demonstration of a day in the life of a service dog. Waldo, who is still in training, performed beautifully and received quite a few treats and a round of applause for his efforts.
We also honour the puppy raisers and trainers of assistance dogs; and recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities. The celebration takes place each year, starting on the first Sunday of August. In 2014, International Assistance Dog Week will be from 3rd – 9th August.
Whilst we at South African Guide-Dogs may only train Guide, Service and Autism support dogs, they too make a difference in many people’s lives.
