The Johannesburg Emergency Services has advised people living along banks of rivers, such as Jukskei in Alexandra north of Johannesburg, to find alternative accommodation.

This comes as rains continue to fall across Johannesburg. Dozens of families from Kliptown in Soweto have been displaced after their houses were flooded due to heavy down pour about a week ago. Temporary shelter has been found for them.

Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Radebe says: “The water level at Jukskei has subsided. But we are urging all those if they could find alternative housing in case it rains more than this. And those that are driving, it’s very dangerous to underestimate the power of water. If you see a road that is flooded call 10177, they would be able to assist.”

In Limpopo heavy rains have also caused havoc. Police have rescued a man who was earlier reported missing due to floods in Mokopane.

The police search and rescue team has not yet found a 69 year-old woman who went missing in Bela-Bela, after a dam wall was damaged.

The body of her 74 year-old husband has been recovered. Parts of the Waterberg region have experienced flooding due to heavy rainfall which started about a week ago.
