One dead, another critical in road works confusion

One man was killed and three others injured one of them critically, in a collision on the R511 in Lonehill, early on Sunday morning, April 6, 2014.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene to find the mangled vehicle on the construction road. One of the occupants of the vehicle had sustained severe head trauma and was declared dead. Another man sustained critical injuries including lacerations to his head and chest. The two remaining patients suffered only minor injuries.

ER24 paramedics jumped into action, treating the critical patient. Jaws-of-life equipment had to be used to free some of the occupants before further treatment could continue. Once freed, paramedics placed the critical man on a spine board before he was transported to a hospital in Johannesburg for urgent treatment.

The remainder of the patients were treated and transported by various other services on scene.

Witnesses told paramedics on scene that the vehicle had apparently been speeding on the construction road when it drove into a ditch. This resulted in the vehicle becoming airborne and colliding with the concrete barrier.

Local authorities were on scene to begin their investigation.
