The South African Police Service’s Crime Intelligence Unit in conjunction with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), apprehended a 34-year-old Soshanguve man in connection with several rapes and house robberies committed around the Soshanguve area.
The man was arrested on Wednesday 23 April 2014 during a sting operation while he was fetching his girlfriend at a shopping centre in Soshanguve.
SAPS members have been looking for this suspect since 2012 and managed to track him down after extensive investigations were conducted between crime intelligence and detectives. There are 27 case dockets of rape and house robbery under investigation in which he is believed to be the perpetrator.
Blood was drawn from the suspect after his arrest in an endeavour to link him by means of DNA to these and possibly other crimes. Further investigations will also reveal whether he was aided by accomplices.
The suspect is alleged to have preyed on women who stayed alone or walked alone to bus and train stations and other destinations. He would rape them and rob them of their valuables.
The suspect, Sipho Mbokazi alias “Young Man”, 36 years of age, made an appearance in the Soshanguve Magistrates’ Court today, Friday 25 April 2014 and the matter was postponed to 2 May 2014.
