Steyn City lifestyle estate currently under construction along the Jukskei River, between William Nicol Drive (R511) and Cedar Road will comprise residential, commercial, retail and leisure components across 2 000 acres, 1 000 acres of which will be open, wooded parkland.
The developers of Steyn City are committed to improving the surrounding infrastructure to ensure that local stakeholders also benefit from the development. This includes partnering with government for the recent road upgrade and Erling interchange along the William Nicol. This upgrade will ensure ease of flow of traffic and the new gatehouses on William Nicol and Cedar roads will serve as the primary points of entry and exit for residents, tenants and visitors.
The gatehouses are a first at any lifestyle estate in South Africa in terms of their capacity for a total of 14 lanes – seven entry and seven exit lanes. This is so as to accommodate a substantial number of residents once Steyn City is complete and means there will never be queues to contend with and similarly no backlog onto the major arterial routes affecting other commuters in the area.
The gatehouses have been built in a semi-circular shape which is a welcoming form that draws one in. The design is classically inspired yet contemporary. Architects drew on principles of classicism, but the gatehouses simultaneously reflect the present. Hence sandstone-clad walls, arches and classical colonnades have been juxtaposed against full-height performance glass façades.
The gatehouses include offices for the estate management functions, as well as the sales functions on the entrance side, while the central tower houses shared meeting rooms on the first floor and a large multivolume committee room capped by a dome on the second floor.
Comments Giuseppe Plumari, CEO of Steyn City Properties, “A great deal of research was done into the security systems at South African lifestyle estates and gatehouses so as to offer the most sophisticated yet unobtrusive features at Steyn City. The intention is to create an environment where residents are not conscious of the security that is in place, but will be able to enjoy the relaxed and peaceful lifestyle of yesteryear.”
