Santana: “Please donate your second-hand shoes to victims of fire in Kya Sands”
In honour of Mandela’s long walk to freedom, the DA Northways branch in Ward 115 has set up boxes at Douglasdale Shopping Centre, All Saints Shopping Centre and four other shopping centres in the ward for residents to donate their good, second-hand shoes and socks to victims of fire in Kya Sands. The boxes will be left at the shopping centres until Monday, 28 July.
“Many of our fellow citizens in neighbouring Kya Sands lost everything in the recent fires, and are barefoot in the biting cold. We can help them with our donations,” says ward 115 councillor, Chris Santana. “This is a gift from Ward 115 to Ward 96.”
Graham Pearson, chair, DA Northways branch (Ward 115), adds, “Caz Rathje, DA branch member, heard from councillor Matome Mafokwane of Ward 96 that, due to a fire in the Kya Sands settlement last month, a lot of people were without shoes and socks in this very cold weather. Caz suggested that we use this as an opportunity to celebrate Mandela Day by collecting second-hand shoes and socks as a project for the day – and then for a week.”
