This morning at around at 3.30am members of the Randburg Police station saw a suspicious silver Honda Civic with no number plates. Police indicated for the vehicle to pull over but the driver of the vehicle refused to stop.
The driver evaded five police road blocks and went through red robots and stop streets. The Randburg SAPS were in hot pursuit of the vehicle following the car through Randburg, into Douglasdale, and requested that members of Douglasdale SAPS give them back-up.
“The suspects were speeding down Witkoppen Road with police vehicles close behind when they opened fire on the police, the police fired back”, said Douglasdale police spokesman, Warrant Officer Balan Muthan.
As the suspects approached Main Road the driver sustained a gunshot wound, forcing him off the road then crashing into a palisade fence. The driver was critically injured and transported by ambulance via police escort and will remain under police guard.
The suspects were arrested by police and have been taken into custody. Traffic was severely affected this morning and only started flowing at around 9am as police finished clearing the scene.
Many residents from surrounding areas heard the shots and ‘phoned various police stations and security companies to report the gunfire.
